This may be my favorite deck, even among Nord’s other fantastic products. I tend to run very RP heavy games, so adding additional damage or debilitating effects on top of criticals is not as appealing to me. Instead, players get an additional reward for their lucky natural 20’s by getting a small boon that they can play later. Most of these boons are dice roll bonuses or advantage that can used for combat, and sometimes even out of combat, checks. I particularly like the fortuitous circumstance card that rewards player creativity without being overpowered. The cards are fun to utilize, and my players get excited when they can draw one during the game.
Even better is that I am also involved as the DM because I pull a card from a different stack when the players roll a 1. Instead of punishing the player for their lowest roll (which I have never been a fan of making a heroic character look like an idiot due to bad luck), the DM collects penalties that can be played against the characters. Most of these are negatives to rolls, failed checks, and a few other drawbacks that range from hassles, to something that may change the flow of an encounter. Nothing brutally punishing, but I have gotten moans of despair from my players by using a challenging card at just the right time. 🙂
Overall, these cards are fun to use and significant enough to actually make a difference in game without being overwhelming good or bad. I don’t require cards to be shown when drawn, so it adds a bit of tension when they are in reserve because neither side knows what options might be played. This is exactly the kind of product I look for, easy to use while adding something to the gaming experience in a balanced way.

This deck is simple and easy to include in any game, they spice up natural 1s and 20s with balanced and interesting effects. My players loved this, and I don’t have any regrets about getting the physical deck!
